Look Great In Native American Costumes For Independence Day Celebrations Or Halloween. See The Full Range Of American Indian Costumes.
It must be emphasized that Native American clothing are distinctive from one tribe to the next even within the same locality. Indeed, the Native Americans of old were able to identify a person's tribe, even the specific area of origin, just by looking at the clothes, headdresses and ornamentations on the body. Add in the differences in behavior and language and you have a truly diverse culture!
Such diversity is often reflected in the choice of Native American costumes available online. Although the colors are almost always limited to the brown shades, the ornamentations and accessories are very varied ranging from bead and fringes to headdresses and moccasins. Just choose which one best suits the tribe you wish to belong to, if only for a day and night during the costume party, and have a whooping good time!
Traditional Wear
There were also commonalities in the Native American clothes that made them the hallmarks of what we now categorize as such category of clothing. Men wore breechcloths, which were long, rectangular pieces of processed animal hide tucked over a belt. It gave the appearance of flaps in front and behind that you may not want to wear even to a party filled with people in various Native American costumes.
Fortunately, you can always pair the breechcloth with leather leggings for more modesty. Or you can go for the fur trousers popular with Indian tribes. You can then pair your trousers with buckskin war shirts ornamented with quill and beads as well as ermine tails and hair ala Plain Indians warriors.
Native American women wore different dresses depending on the tribes to which she belonged to. Most wore leggings and skirts although the designs, materials and hem lengths differed, a fact also true of the shirts worn in public.
Thus, you will see many Native American costumes in either combos of skirt-and-shirt or one-piece dresses. Think along the lines of the dress worn by Pocahontas in the cartoon movie.
Men and women had some form of protection on their feet either the mukluk (heavy boots) or moccasin (leather shoes). Again, the styles differed from one tribe to the next although we usually associate fringes with Native American footwear.
Contemporary Wear
With the arrival of the white colonizers, the garb of the Native Americans slowly began to absorb the influences of European dress. It must also be noted that with increased interaction between the tribes, borrowing of design influences began to appear.
Nowadays, the contemporary Native American costume include styles like Seminole patchwork skirts, ribbon shirts, beaded jackets, satin shawls and the Cherokee tear dress. Of course, distinctive features like fringes, beads and shells as well as the more expensive turquoise dresses are also available. If you have the money to spare, you can always splurge on the full regalia used in important ceremonies like powwows and other formal events.
The variety of Native American costumes means that you will never run out of ideas to play with. Just remember to do a little bit of research if you want to aim for authenticity as well as to avoid offending tribal sensibilities.
